Update: Lakers forward Derrick Caracter, who hasn't played this season because of a torn knee ligament, participated in limited drills Saturday and has been cleared to practice. He could make his season debut in the next week. The Pacers have seven players who average at least 10 points a game, led by forward Danny Granger (16.2 points), center Roy Hibbert (13.6 points, 10.1 rebounds) and free-agent acquisition David West (11.6 points).

The Los Angeles Lakers return home looking to avoid their third straight loss as they host the Indiana Pacers
It’s been a disappointing week for the Lakers who returned from their two game Florida trip with back to back losses and have now dropped three of their last four overall. Los Angeles especially struggled from beyond the arc, making just 6-20 in their losses to Miami on Thursday and then the next night in Orlando. On the season, the Lakers are one of the worst three point shooting teams in the league at just 25.7%. With the consecutive road losses, the Lakers dropped to 1-6 on the road, however they are 9-1 at Staples Center.
After their disappointing meltdown in Sacramento, the Pacers bounced back with a hard fought 94-91 victory over the Golden State Warriors to improve to 10-4 overall. Indiana gave up a 14 point lead and was held to just eight points in Wednesday night’s loss in Sacramento, however it was a different story against the Warriors on Friday night. Trailing by two at three quarter time, the Pacers outscored the Warriors 27-22 to come away with the victory, thanks to a game high 26 points from Danny Granger.
Head to head, the Pacers are 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Los Angeles, while the favorite is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings and the road team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings. The Lakers are just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Pacers on the other hand are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog of 5.0-10.5.
Having lost three of four, the Lakers are in a mini slump, but luckily for them they are 9-1 at home this season. I’m not sure what to make of this Pacers squad on the road this season. On one hand, they looked good in Boston and Golden State, and then they struggled against the likes of Toronto and Sacramento. I want to take Indiana here, but the line is just a couple of points too low for me to feel comfortable with it. Kobe Bryant and the Lake show should get it done tonight….

Conference Championships

The National Football League (NFL) playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held at the end of the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league's two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season records, and a tie-breaking procedure exists in the case of equal records. The tournament ends with the Super Bowl, the league's championship game, which matches the two conference champions.

NFL Playoff Predictions: Can the Ravens and 49ers Stop the Patriots and Giants?
articles from : bleacherreport.com

Tomorrow is championship Sunday (Sun., Jan. 22) , the day that decides who will move on to the Super Bowl.

Both games could go either way. The 49ers are favored by 2.5 points; the Patriots by 7.

Two interesting Super Bowl matchups could arise from this weekend's games. There could be a rematch of Super Bowl XLII with the Giants and the Patriots, with Eli Manning playing on his brother Peyton's home field; or a 49ers-Ravens rematch, with each team coached by a Harbaugh brother.

Jim and John's teams met on Thanksgiving night, with John leading his Ravens to victory.

Either of these matchups would be a phenomenal Super Bowl to watch.

Even though San Francisco is favored by 2.5 points, I think those points are thrown to the 49ers only because they are playing at home. I believe the Giants should be favored, given their recent run, winning five of their last six (including the pivotal game against the Cowboys that got them into the playoffs).

So the question that remains is this: What can the Ravens and 49ers do to win on Sunday?

A win on the road in New England is a tough sell in the playoffs. The Pats have a rowdy bunch of fans who make that stadium awfully loud. They are also coming off a blowout win in the divisional round, beating Tim Tebow and the Broncos 45-10.

The Patriots, who appeared to consider the game a complete joke, allowed Tom Brady to punt the ball on third down in the fourth quarter (Brady actually punted for 48 yards, the longest punt of the day by both teams).

At least the Ravens lucked out in the weather department. Snow is in the forecast for most of the day today, but clear and sunny for game day.

The first thing the Ravens need to do is to have a stronger offensive day. The 20 points they scored may have been good enough to beat Houston in Baltimore, but that won't work when traveling to New England.

Joe Flacco threw for only 176 yards and two touchdowns. Even worse? Ray Rice had only 60 yards rushing and did not score a touchdown. He averaged only 2.9 yards per carry.

The Ravens offense is so dependent on the running game that Rice will need to rush for more than 100 yards and score at least a touchdown or two for the Ravens to have even a remote chance of winning.

The second task for the Ravens is to stop Brady. But even more important, the Ravens must control Rob Gronkowski. He is a giant, scary target who had the most receiving touchdowns (17) in the regular season, and had three more last week against the Broncos.

The Patriots running game is pretty shaky, so look for coverage deep down the field and coverage all over Brady.

The forecast of rain all day Sunday in San Francisco will make the game interesting and potentially sloppy.

The 49ers are coming off a tight win over the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round, which was by far the best game of last week.

What is more important to note is the Giants, well, giant win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau last Sunday, beating the Packers 37-20.

The Packers were a heavy favorite to repeat as Super Bowl champs. But with the Giants chugging along, the game appeared to be a mismatch. It's hard not to think that this won't continue Sunday, which would bring the Giants into the Super Bowl for the second time in five years.

It's an obvious point, but this game will mostly be determined by how well the 49ers defense plays. The 49ers won last week despite allowing the Saints to score 32 points.

The 49ers can't allow the same wiggle room to the Giants. Unlike the Saints, they have a passing and rushing game to worry about.

And, well, the 49ers offense needs to have a repeat performance this week. Alex Smith outplayed Drew Brees last week, and the 49ers will win only if he can outplay Eli Manning on Sunday. Smith threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns last week, and also rushed for another score.

What the 49ers also need is a better performance out of Frank Gore. He rushed for 89 yards and no scores Saturday, but did average an amazing 6.8 yards per carry. He can do this against the Giants, but will need to add scores to that stat line to bring in a 49ers win.

Super Bowl XLVI

I imagine that we will be seeing a Giants-Patriots Super Bowl again this year. The offenses for the Giants and Patriots are just too hot to stop, even for the great defenses of the 49ers and Ravens.

To be honest, I don't want that Super Bowl, which people find odd since I live in New England. What I want is a Harbaugh Bowl.

Growing up in a competitive household with an older brother, I can't imagine anything better than a family feud in the Super Bowl.

Remember last August? Arsenal were in meltdown, United were dead-certs to win the league again, Marouane Chamakh was an attacking option for Arsene Wenger and David de Gea still started league games for United.
This is January, and the stakes are arguably much, much higher.
Welcome back football fans to another live blog commentary with me, Karl Matchett, as the Gunners entertain the Red Devils looking to exact some sort of revenge on the humiliation of that massive defeat at the beginning of the season.
Much more than three points are at stake of course, with Arsenal looking to close the gap on the Champions League places and Manchester United looking to close the gap on the actual league leaders—their neighbours Manchester City.

Timberwolves-Clippers Preview

By NOEY KUPCHAN , STATS Writer
The Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota Timberwolves have long been recognized as two of the least successful franchises in the NBA.
While it's safe to say the Clippers have transformed themselves into one of the league's better teams, the Timberwolves have also made strides.
Los Angeles looks to extend its home winning streak to eight Friday night against a Minnesota team seeking a third consecutive victory for the first time in almost two years.
The Clippers, whose winning percentage of 31.4 over the previous four seasons ranks second lowest in the league in front of only the Timberwolves' 23.8, are enjoying plenty of success behind a revamped lineup.
The additions of former All-Stars Caron Butler, Chauncey Billups and most notably superstar point guard Chris Paul have turned Los Angeles (8-4) into a likely playoff contender.
Playing without Paul (strained left hamstring) for the third consecutive game, the Clippers - who've already posted wins over Miami and the Lakers - pulled out another impressive victory Wednesday. Billups scored 21 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer with a second remaining to hand Dallas a 91-89 defeat.
"We beat a good team tonight without our best player, so it was big for us, confidence-wise," said guard Mo Williams, who returned from a three-game absence due to a sore right foot to score 26 points.
"For us, to be able to do these things that we're doing, we've got veteran guys that relish these moments."
Minnesota has won three of four after losing seven of its first 10, beating Detroit 93-85 on Wednesday to improve to 6-8. The Timberwolves didn't post their sixth win last season until game No. 23.
They trailed by seven after three quarters but limited the Pistons to 14 points over the final 12 minutes. Minnesota hasn't won three in a row since a four-game run Jan. 29-Feb. 6, 2010.
"We have a lot of fight in us," swingman Wes Johnson told the team's official website. "Last year we would have laid down a lot more. But I think at those points, the mindset has changed so much starting with training camp. I think that rolled into the season.
"We've got a lot of stuff to work on, but for our group I think our mindset is changing."
Much of the Timberwolves' success can be linked to a tremendous defensive improvement. Minnesota is giving up 92.5 points per game after allowing a league-worst 107.7 in 2010-11.
"It feels good. It's something that's been lacking the last few years," said Kevin Love, who posted his 14th straight double-double to start the season with 20 points and 17 rebounds Wednesday. "In games like this where it's ugly on the offensive end, we were still able to get the job done."
Love ranks near the top of the league with averages of 25.2 points and 14.5 boards, and he figures to match up with reigning rookie of the year Blake Griffin.
Griffin, averaging team bests of 21.3 points and 11.8 rebounds, had a season-high 17 boards versus the Mavericks.
Paul, averaging 21.1 points and 10.5 assists lifetime versus the Timberwolves, is uncertain to suit up Friday.
Minnesota's Michael Beasley has missed the last seven contests with a sprained right foot and didn't travel with the team as it begins a two-game trip.
Los Angeles has taken six of the last eight meetings in this series, winning all four at home by an average of 11.3 points.

The Black Mamba and the Lakers visit Superman and the Magic Friday night for a prime-time battle.

LA Lakers (10-5) at Orlando Magic (10-4)

The Los Angeles Lakers will visit the Orlando Magic Friday night in central Florida at the Amway Center.
The Lakers have transitioned quite well from Phil Jackson to Mike Brown. Under Brown, the Lakers look rejuvenated, and look like a title contender. L.A. is 10-5 this season and getting it done on both ends of the court. Kobe Bryant is playing like a man possessed, averaging 30.8 ppg with a bad wrist. Usually Kobe picks and chooses his spots, but this year Kobe is out to make a statement, and I do not think that should go unnoticed. When he is healthy and has some support, Kobe is far and away the best player in the league, period. Andrew Bynum is averaging a double-double with 16.5 ppg and 13.9 rpg. Pau Gasol is not too far off either, averaging 15.9 ppg and 9.5 rpg. The Lakers lead the league in rebounding, and any time you can get a player like Kobe extra possessions, it is going to lead to wins.
The Magic are quietly putting together a nice season in Orlanda, going 10-4 to start the season. Three of the Magic’s four losses have come to some of the league’s best teams in Oklahoma City, Chicago, and San Antonio. Dwight Howard is having yet another monster season, but whether or not he will be traded remains to be seen. Howard is averaging 20.1 ppg and a ridiculous 15.6 rpg. Superman will have his biggest test of the season with the Lakers frontcourt, which arguably the best in the league. Andrew Bynum is one of the only players in the league that can physically matchup with Howard, and it should be a great battle. The Magic are also getting Ryan Anderson, Hedo Turkoglu, and J.J. Redick this year as well.
The Lakers are 7-8 ATS and the Magic are 7-6-1. L.A. is 1-4 ATS on the road and Orlanda is 3-4 ATS at home.

The Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard must make momentous choices about their futures in the weeks ahead. Those decisions, whatever they turn out to be, could affect Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum.

That is what makes Friday's Magic-Lakers matchup at Amway Center so intriguing. The Magic's current center could be facing the Magic's center of the future.

To understand how Bynum compares to Howard, the Orlando Sentinel asked an executive for an NBA team, ESPN analyst Jon Barry and NBA TV analyst Dennis Scott to evaluate Bynum. Their conclusions are similar: Although Bynum is a very good player who is improving, he simply is not on Howard's level.
"If you took Bynum and put him on the Orlando Magic, they're not 10-4 right now," Barry said. "There's just no way. I don't see him as being a guy that carries a team. He's not a franchise player. Dwight Howard is a franchise player."

This is the dilemma the Magic face. Howard finished as the runner-up in last season's MVP voting, and it will be enormously difficult for Orlando to receive equal value if the franchise decides it must trade him before the March 15 trade deadline.
